Hepatoxicity of boneset

Dear Stephen,
I have been using boneset and like its effects on babesia. I read it is a member of a family of herbs that have a hepatoxic property. How can I take it safely if it is hepatoxic? Thanks.

Stephen’s response:
Some eupatoriums contain pyrolizadine alkaloids (PAs), boneset does not. It has not been shown to have hepatotoxic actions, nor does it contain PAs, so it is fine as far as anyone knows. Personally, I am not conviced by the PA toxicity reports. When you get into the studies that show toxicity, they aren’t very well developed. Nevertheless, boneset is fine.
